The whole setup, in one delivery. Two kilos of Fijian kava, a tanoa, twelve bilos and the cloths to strain it — enough for a full session with a room full of people.

Kava has never been a drink you have on your own. The bowl sits in the middle, someone mixes, the bilo goes round, and the talking starts. That's what this set is for.

About the name

Talanoa is a Fijian word. It means to talk — but not small talk, and not a meeting with an agenda. Talanoa is the open, unhurried conversation that happens when people sit down together with nowhere else to be: stories told, news shared, things worked through, everyone given their say.

It's the same word in Tonga and Samoa. And it's what tends to happen around a tanoa on its own — the bowl gets mixed, the bilo goes round, and before long the talanoa has started without anyone deciding it should.

Fiji took the word to the world in 2017, proposing a Talanoa Dialogue at the UN climate talks: a way of getting nations to speak to one another the way people speak around a kava bowl. We named this set after it because the kava is only half of what you're buying. The rest is the evening it makes possible.

What's in the set

  • 2kg Karan's Fiji Kava — traditional grind, around 15 sessions
  • 1 x Tanoa (plastic) — the mixing bowl, sized for a group
  • 12 x Coconut bilo — the traditional cup, one each for a full circle
  • 6 x Strainer cloths — required for traditional grind, and reusable

Mixing for a group

  1. Add 8–10 tablespoons of kava to the strainer cloth and gather it into a bundle.
  2. Fill the tanoa with 3–4 litres of cool water.
  3. Knead the cloth in the water for 4–5 minutes, until the water turns dark and cloudy.
  4. Wring the cloth out, then lift it clear.
  5. Fill each bilo about two-thirds and pass it round. Stir the tanoa between servings — the good part settles.

Drink a bilo in one go rather than sipping it. Clap once when you're done, if that's how your circle does it.

Who it's for

Built for people who drink kava together rather than alone — households, rugby and league clubs, church groups, community gatherings, and anyone hosting regularly. If you've been buying 500g bags and running out halfway through the night, this is the one.

Looking after it

Rinse the tanoa and bilos with water after use and let them air dry. Wash the cloths in plain water without detergent and hang them to dry fully before storing. Keep the kava sealed in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight.

Not for sale to persons under 18. Not available for delivery to the Northern Territory. Do not consume with alcohol. Avoid if pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have a liver condition. Do not drive or operate machinery after drinking kava.
