FAQs

What is kava?

Kava, or yaqona in Fijian, is a drink made from the root of Piper methysticum, native to the South Pacific. It has been prepared and shared in Fiji for centuries, at ceremonies and on ordinary evenings alike. More on our What is Kava page.

What is the difference between waka and lewena?

Waka is the lateral root — the thin roots branching from the base of the plant. Lewena is the basal stump. Waka is harder to harvest and more sought after, so much of the kava on the market is a blend of the two. Ours is 100% waka.

Where does your kava come from?

Kadavu, Gau, Savusavu and Rabi, through our family's business in Fiji, Ram Karan Kava Dealers, started by my grandfather in the early 1960s. See Our Story.

What is noble kava?

Kava cultivars are classified as noble or non-noble. Noble varieties are the ones traditionally selected for drinking over many generations, and only noble varieties may be imported into Australia as a food.

How do I prepare it?

Traditional grind is kneaded in a strainer cloth in cool water for three to four minutes, then wrung out and served in a bilo. Full method on our preparation guide.

Do I need a strainer cloth?

Yes, for traditional grind. It cannot be stirred into water like an instant powder. We sell cloths singly and in 12-packs, and our starter pack includes one.

How much does a bag make?

As a rough guide, 100g is around four or five sessions, 500g around fifteen to twenty, and 1kg around thirty to forty, depending on how strong you like it and how many people are drinking.

How should I store it?

Sealed, in a cool dry place out of direct sunlight.

Is kava legal in Australia?

Kava may be imported into Australia for use as a food under permit from the Office of Drug Control. Rules differ between states and territories, and it is your responsibility to know what applies where you live.

Do you deliver to the Northern Territory?

No. We are unable to send kava to Northern Territory addresses.

Do you sell to people under 18?

No. Kava is sold to adults only, and we may ask for proof of age.

Do you supply wholesale?

Yes — clubs, churches, community groups, retailers and standing orders. We have 5kg and 10kg tiers on the site, and for larger quantities or freight to regional addresses, email sales@karanskava.com for a proper quote.

Anything I should know before drinking it?

Kava is sold for use as a food. Use in moderation. It may cause drowsiness, so do not drive or operate machinery after drinking it. Do not consume it with alcohol. Avoid it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have a liver condition. If you have any health concerns or take medication, speak with a qualified health practitioner before drinking kava.
