About the tanoa
The tanoa is the bowl kava is mixed in, and in Fijian life it is far more than a piece of kitchenware. It sits at the centre of the gathering. The person who mixes sits behind it, and everyone else sits around it. Ceremonies, welcomes, apologies, weddings and funerals have all been conducted around one.
A carved tanoa on display carries that meaning into a home. Every one is worked by hand, so the grain and proportions differ slightly from piece to piece.
Who it's for
Anyone furnishing a home with Pacific pieces, marking a connection to Fiji, or looking for a gift that means something to a Fijian household. It also makes a distinctive centrepiece for a room where kava is actually drunk.
If you want one to mix in
This one is decorative. For preparing kava, see our 4.5L Kava Bowl — same shape, built to be used and rinsed out afterwards.
Care
Dust with a dry or barely damp cloth. Keep out of direct sunlight and away from heat to prevent the timber drying and splitting. Do not soak or submerge.
